SCREEN TV ADAPTER KIT INSTRUCTIONS: CREATE YOUR OWN 100 PROJECTION SCREEN TV
It is suggested that you print out these instructions. Use your browser print function (IE users can print uising the upper IE toolbar File>Print).
MATERIAL LIST of
SUPPLIES for this project:
PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS: SUMMARY: You will be constructing two cardboard boxes that will be attached to the outside of your TV screen. The first box is cut to the same dimensions as the viewable screen of your TV. The second box containing the Projector Lens fits inside the first box so it is slightly smaller. Once you have these two boxes built, you simply affix them to your TV and aim it at a wall, sheet or your projection screen for best results. You can adjust how large the screen will be by moving the TV nearer or closer to the wall, and you can adjust the focus by sliding the second box in or out for fine tuning. You can adjust the Lightness/Darkness and Contrast settings on your TV to further refine the picture quality. It is that simple.

STEP ONE: TESTING
YOUR EXISTING TELEVISION:
If you havent
checked your TV prior to buying this kit, you really should have tested
already before buying as it was mentioned in the description of this
project. Some TVs do not function properly when turning upside down.
Before starting your project, you should test your TV to ensure that
it will work. To check it, just flip the TV upside down or turn it on
its back so the viewable screen is facing up. Look to see if the TV
colors maintain their quality. Also, try playing your TV while it is
lying on its back with the viewable screen facing the ceiling. Test
to see if it will work. If yes, you are in business. If not, you may
notice the color or image has red/blue values that are blurry and distorted.
In this case, you will need to find another TV capable of functioning
properly while upturned. I suggest buying a cheap TV with good picture
at a garage sale or swap meet, but remember that the picture quality
of the TV will determine the quality of your Projection Screen TV.
Test to see if your
TV can be properly viewed while upturned as seen above. STEP TWO: BUILDING
YOUR ADAPTER BOX: BOX ONE & BOX TWO
1.)
Start by measuring the width and height of your TVs viewable
screen. You want to measure just the viewable screen itself, not the
whole TV just the height and width of the screen itself. However, if
you have a groove outside screen, you can sue that to get your measurements
because it will provide a superior fit for your box. See diagram below.
PICTURE 1:
STANDARD MEASUREMENTS OF VIEWABLE SCREEN
PICTURE 2:
MEASUREMENTS FROM NEAREST GROOVE (*note: arrows have changed) The idea
is to find a nice pre-existing groove in order to fit your BOX ONE into
this groove.
2.)
With the measurements you just took, you will now cut out your
framing for BOX ONE. You will cut four pieces of cardboard (or Foam
Board or plywood) to construct the box. See diagram below. All pieces
should be 25 deep. You can cut away any excess later when you are fine-tuning.
For bigger TVs use a larger depth (more than 25 like 34) for smaller
TVs like 15 or less you can reduce the depth to about 18. The top
and bottom pieces should both be equal to the width of your TV screen.
The left and right pieces should both be equal to the height of your
screen.
3.)
Repeat this process to create BOX TWO. Be sure to remember
that this box must fit inside of BOX ONE so it will need to be a little
bit smaller in width and height. BOX TWO should only be 12 deep and
when cutting the width and height of the pieces remember to make them
slightly smaller so it will fit comfortably into BOX ONE. It needs to
slide in and out for focusing so if it is too tight it will create problems
later.
4.)
Now that you have all of your pieces, you will need to spray
paint them black on both sides. Do two coats using flat or matte black
spray paint to ensure that they are properly covered. You could also
use Black Construction paper to line the inside and outside of all panel.
If you use black paper, be sure to use good tape so it does not come
loose when adjusting the focus since BOX TWO will need to slide in and
out of BOX ONE. When painting, paint in a well-ventilated area. You
can lay down newspapers and paint them in the yard to minimize any mess.
Allow ample time for pieces to dry before proceeding on to next step.
5.)
Once your pained cardboard pieces are dry, you are ready to
construct BOX ONE and BOX TWO. To do this, simply line up all of BOX
ONE pieces (all of those that are 25 deep) and place them side-by-side
and use your duct tape to create a box. See diagram below. Be sure that
you have them alternating as outlined below (BOTTOM SIDE TOP SIDE)
so the box will maintain the dimensions of your TV screen. Use duct
tape to tape all seams and create BOX ONE. Be sure duct tape covers
all spaces, gaps or cracks so that no light is allowed to escape. Repeat
this process with BOX TWO pieces (all of those that are 12 deep).
Your finished boxes will look like the picture to your
right. You can check out more
photos posted at the members only website. STEP
THREE: BUILDING YOUR PROJECTOR LENS ATTACHMENT:
The Projector Lens Attachment is attached to the top of BOX TWO that, as you remember, fits inside of BOX ONE, snug but movable.
1.)
Cut a piece of cardboard to match the size of BOX TWO (take
measurements of width and height, not the 12 depth. Remember
that this measurement was slightly less than the width and height of
your TV screen to allow it to fit into BOX ONE.
See diagram below.
2.)
After cutting this piece, measure out the center of the piece.
You can mark the center point with a dot or an X because it is going
to be cut out anyway. Place your Projector Lens so that it is centered
on the center of this cardboard piece and use a pen or pencil to trace
the outside of your Lens. After tracing the outside of Lens, take away
your Lens and use your ruler to measure in one inch from this box so
you will draw a rectangle that measures 6 high by 9 wide.
3.)
After drawing
this new smaller box inside the tracing of your Lens, you can now cut
out this 6 by 9 rectangle using your scissors, box cutter or Exacto
knife.
4.)
Attach the PROJECTOR LENS ATTACHMENT to the outside of BOX
TWO by using duct tape. Seal all corners and seams to make sure no light
will escape.
5.)
After attaching LENS ATTACHMENT to BOX ONE, you can not attach
the PROJECTOR LENS by taping the Lens so the grooved side is faces outwards.
The smooth side will be facing the TV screen itself after you have added
this new Projector Lens Attachment to BOX TWO. Use enough tape to keep
LENS secure but do not allow duct tape to overlap into viewable area.
STEP FOUR: ASSEMBLING
PROJECTION SCREEN TV ADAPTER BOX:
You now have constructed two boxes, BOX ONE and BOX TWO that
contains the Lens and fits inside BOX ONE. To complete your assembly,
you can simply slip BOX TWO into BOX ONE so that the Lens is facing
out and the inside of BOX TWO is facing the TV screen.
See diagram below.
STEP FIVE: ATTACHING
TV ADAPTER KIT TO YOUR TV:
You now have a complete Projection Screen TV Adapter Box. You are ready to attach it to your TV.
1.)
Flip your TV upside down so the screen is facing the wall,
sheet, your projection screen or wherever you are going to project your
TV image.
2.)
Use tape to affix the TV Adapter Box to the viewable screen
of your TV. The TV Adapter Box should perfectly fit the width and height
of your TV screen so no light is escaping.
3.)
Position your TV about six feet from the wall, sheet, your
projection screen or wherever you are going to project your TV image.
4.)
Turn off the lights and dim the room. You may need to pull
blinds or block out any light entering through windows and doorways
to ensure complete darkness of the room.
5.)
Turn on your TV and slide BOX TWO in and out to focus your
picture.
6.)
The picture quality and focus ability will depend on how far
you are from the wall, sheet, projection screen or wherever you are
going to project your TV image. If you place your TV closer to the wall,
you will have a smaller picture but it will be of better quality. If
you move your TV further from the wall you will have a bigger screen
(up to 100 viewable projection screen) but the quality of the picture
will be less refined.
7.)
Experiment
with the positioning of your TV relative to the projected source to
match your viewing tastes. You can slide BOX TWO in or out to focus
the image. You can also use the Light/Dark settings and the Contrast
settings on your TV to further refine the picture quality. *OPTIONAL STEP SIX:
ATTACHING A MIRROR:
This sixth step is optional. By attaching a 12 x 12 mirror, you will be able to flip the inverted text. The only drawback is that some loss of picture quality will result but if you want the projected image to show readable text and prevent it from being projected backwards, you will need to add the mirror attachment to flip the text accordingly. In order to use the TV Adapter Box with mirror attachment, you will need to flip your TV upside down, on its back so the viewable screen is facing upwards. The mirror attachment will reflect your TV image straight ahead onto your projected source.
1.)
You will need to cut two triangles and tape the triangles to
the sides of your mirror forming a 45 degree angle at the base. The
measurements will depend on your previous measurements. See diagram
below.
2.)
The front of the mirror attachment will be 90 degree angles
with 45 degree angles on the back. See diagram below.
3.)
Secure the mirror attachment to the top of BOX ONE using duct
tape.
8.)
You are now ready to fine tune and focus.
9.)
Turn on your TV and slide BOX TWO in and out to focus your
picture.
10.)
11.)
Experiment with the positioning of your TV relative to the
projected source to match your viewing tastes. You can slide BOX TWO
in or out to focus the image. You can also use the Light/Dark settings
and the Contrast settings on your TV to further refine the picture quality.

PROBLEM SOLVING SECTION:
Problem: The picture is not showing up on my projected
source.
Problem: The picture is blurry. Fix 2: Move TV closer to projected source. Fix 3: Adjust your TV setting to refine focus (Light/Darkness
and Contrast settings) Fix 4: The Lens or TV screen is dirty and needs cleaning. Fix 5: The projected source is not reflective enough to provide
quality projection image. A high-quality projection screen is recommended
for best results. Fix 6: Your TV itself has problems. Check the TV image and
quality before projecting image. Poor TV reception or poor quality image
will not be improved by the TV Adapter Kit.
Problem: Too dim to see picture even in the complete darkness. Fix: Adjust LIGHTNESS and CONTRAST settings on your TV. The
wall or projector screen is not reflective enough to show projected
image. Lens or TV screen needs cleaning. Make sure that you have sealed
all gaps or areas where light could be escaping. Problem: The picture is clear only on one side. Problem: The picture is clear in the middle but sides are blurry Fix: The Lens is in backwards. Remove it and face it with the
grooved side facing the front.
Problem: The picture is not uniformly focused. It is in some
spots but not everywhere.
Problem: The picture is very blurry
Problem: The picture is clear in the middle but sides
are blurry
